Your Guide To Keeping Your Pet Safe During The Hot Summer Months

Summer is the ideal time to engage in fun, outdoor activities with your pets. However, with the intense heat, beaming sun, and the abundance of pests that thrive in the hot, humid weather, there are several important measures to take to ensure that your pet can enjoy the summer while remaining healthy, safe, and happy. Here are our favorite ways to prepare our pets for the upcoming season change.

Invest in Preventative Care

Summer is the peak season for a variety of diseases and illnesses, including heartworm and various conditions that derive from ticks and fleas. Preventative care is an essential step to prepare your pet for summer. Schedule an appointment with your pet’s trusted veterinarian to ensure they are caught up on their vaccinations and preventative medications to combat the risk of them falling ill this summer.

Consider Microchipping Your Pet

With the many travels and adventures you look forward to this summer, the risk of your pet getting lost is heightened. While ensuring your pet has a durable leash, harness, and collar can be beneficial, having your pet microchipped increases the chance of being reunited with your pet in the event you become separated while exploring.

Be Mindful of the Heat

Just as humans do not enjoy the feeling of hot pavement under our bare feet, neither do our pets. Be mindful of the temperature outdoors during the summer as your pet can not only burn their paws, but can also get sunburned too. Keep your pet on grassy areas and invest in some pet-safe sunscreen to help protect your pet’s nose and ears while they bask in direct sunlight.

Hydration Is Key

Pets get thirsty much faster than humans do. As such, it’s imperative to ensure your pet has access to fresh, clean water whenever they need it. We recommend placing several water bowls throughout your home to ensure your pet can get a drink to cool down when they need it. You may also give your pet fun frozen treats to increase their water intake, such as watermelon slices or ice cubes.

Follow these practical steps and contact your local veterinarian for your pet’s summer check-up to ensure your pet stays happy, safe, and healthy during the hot months!
