What Are the Signs Your Pet Isn’t Getting Enough Exercise?

Both cats and dogs need daily stimulation and exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. Lack of exercise can make your pet withdrawn, depressed, anxious, and stressed, and they may begin to act out in unhealthy or destructive ways. There are also health risks associated with a lack of exercise in pets, including weight gain, obesity, and an increased risk of heart and liver disease, diabetes, arthritis, and kidney problems. Read through the signs your pet isn’t getting enough exercise, and consult your veterinarian for professional advice and recommendations.

Destructive or Problematic Behavior

A lack of exercise will make your pet bored, restless, and anxious. He may act out in destructive or problematic ways. If you notice that your pet is destroying your home, getting into the trash, or peeing and pooping in inappropriate places, he may be trying to tell you that he is bored and needs more attention and exercise.

Aggressive Behavior

If your pet has become more aggressive with you or other animals in the household, it may be a sign he has some pent up energy he needs to get out. You can provide a more constructive outlet for your pet’s energy through play time and exercise.

Gaining Weight

If your pet starts gaining weight, he is at risk of obesity. Obesity can cause or contribute to dangerous health complications. If your pet suddenly starts gaining weight and you aren’t sure why, make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam.

Agitation and Restlessness

Many pets become agitated and restless when they aren’t getting enough attention or exercise. If your pet paces, whines, pants, whimpers, barks, yowls, and generally acts like he’s trying to get your attention, it may be because he needs more exercise and stimulation.

Depression

Inactivity and lack of attention can quickly make pets depressed. If your pet is acting listless, fatigued, and disinterested in his normal activities, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian. It could be that he is depressed due to a lack of exercise, or there could be an underlying health issue.

Call your veterinarian today if you notice any warning signs that you need to make a change to your pet’s diet or exercise routine.
